"Harlin's Rapture is arresting"
–– BBC Music
"Rapture is a no less adventurous journey that leads from a series of beguiling, unconventional tunes to a final exhilarating sweep of events."
–– Gramophone Magazine
Harlin's "aesthetics capture a sense of tradition and innovation."
–– New York Times
"Rapture is imaginative, intense, dazzling and, dare I say absolutely beautiful."
–– I CARE IF YOU LISTEN
"Rapture demonstrated both imagination and skill, qualities that are self-recommending. One can only hope for more performances and a bright future for the talented young composer.
–– Calgary Herald
"Harlin utilizes a dazzling, diverse set of orchestral colors, which made for a vivid, "high-definition" experience...I was left wanting more of Harlin's music -- about 20 minutes or so, actually...here's hoping that a more long-form symphonic piece will appear in a future season."
–– Daniel J. Kushner,
CITY Newspaper, Rochester
At its conclusion, Rapture surveys the brink of sanity and, with a big ending, magically lifts us above the conflict. Harlin set out to create music about being overwhelmed and overcome by emotion, and he succeeds with Rapture.

Biography
The New York Times writes that Patrick Harlin's “aesthetics capture a sense of tradition and innovation…”
Patrick Harlin's music has been performed by the St. Louis Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Alarm Will Sound, Rochester Philharmonic, Calidore String Quartet, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, and many more. His work Rapture opened the 2016-17 Kansas City Symphony concert season. Ward Stare and the Rochester Philharmonic will recorded Rapture in 2018 on an all American CD featuring the world premiere recording of Jennifer Higdon's Harp Concerto.
In 2019, Patrick was selected as the first Composer-in-Residence with the Lansing Symphony Orchestra through 2022.
Patrick grew up in the Pacific Northwest and holds degrees from Western Washington University and the University of Michigan. His work spans both music composition and sustainability with research in soundscape ecology on location in the Amazon rainforest and Bookcliffs, Utah. He was awarded a 2013 Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Presser Award from the Theodore Presser Foundation. He is the inaugural winner of the Aspen/Hermitage residency, and the final awardee of the Rappaport Prize in Composition. At the University of Michigan he was awarded the Predoctoral Fellowship and is to date the only artist ever awarded the prestigious Graham Sustainability Fellowship.
A recent Calgary Herald review notes "Rapture demonstrated both imagination and skill, qualities that are self-recommending. One can only hope for more performances and a bright future for the talented young composer."

"Harlin utilizes a dazzling, diverse set of orchestral colors, which made for a vivid, "high-definition" experience...I was left wanting more of Harlin's music -- about 20 minutes or so, actually. While this was the first time a work by the 31-year-old composer has been played by the RPO, here's hoping that a more long-form symphonic piece will appear in a future season."

LISTEN TO NPR interview with Patrick preceding the performances of Rapture by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra this season. The work was inspired by the concept of "The Rapture," an overwhelming emotional response to spending weeks underground by ultra cavers on extreme expeditions.
PHOTO JOURNAL: Unbeknownst to most, the Book Cliffs in Utah/Colorado remains one of the most important areas for wildlife in the contiguous United States. It is also the site of current and future oil development, with modest returns for irreversible change to the ecosystem, ecosystem services and future uses. As part of my dissertation I am documenting the baseline acoustic profile of this region, and arguing for the continued preservation of this landscape.
